What Is The Worst Things That Have Happened In History

There is no objective way to identify one event as the single "worst" thing in human history. Different events involved genocide, warfare, famine, enslavement, persecution and enormous loss of life. Several catastrophes nevertheless stand out because of their scale and historical consequences.

The Holocaust

Nazi Germany and its allies and collaborators systematically persecuted and murdered six million European Jews during the Holocaust. Millions of other people were also persecuted and killed under Nazi rule.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum maintains extensive documentary, photographic and testimonial evidence. Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum also preserves evidence associated with the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp complex.

The Transatlantic Slave Trade

For centuries, millions of Africans were forcibly transported across the Atlantic and subjected to enslavement.

UNESCO's Routes of Enslaved Peoples programme examines this history internationally, while national archives in countries including the United Kingdom and United States preserve shipping, government and commercial records connected with slavery.

The World Wars

The First World War caused mass military and civilian casualties across multiple continents. The Second World War produced even greater destruction and included genocide, strategic bombing, occupation, forced displacement and the first wartime use of atomic bombs.

Imperial War Museums, the US National Archives and national archives across participating countries preserve photographs and documents from these conflicts.

Famines And Mass Atrocities

History also includes devastating famines and state-sponsored atrocities. Examples include the Holodomor in Soviet Ukraine, atrocities committed during the Japanese occupation of China, and the Cambodian genocide under the Khmer Rouge.

These subjects can have different legal and political treatment between countries, making careful sourcing particularly important.

How To Compare Historical Events Responsibly

Rather than creating a simple ranking, consider:

  • Estimated deaths and injuries.
  • Deliberate killing versus other causes.
  • Displacement and long-term consequences.
  • Contemporary documents and survivor testimony.
  • Whether estimates remain disputed among historians.

Historical photographs provide only fragments of these events. Museums, archives, court records and eyewitness accounts provide the wider evidence needed to understand what an image actually represents.
