How Long Does It Take To Get A Free Walk-In Shower?

There isn't a standard worldwide waiting time.

A home adaptation can involve more stages than simply applying for money because somebody may need to assess your needs, approve the work, obtain quotations and arrange an installer.

What Can Affect The Waiting Time?

Factors can include:

  • Where you live.
  • Which programme you're using.
  • Current demand.
  • Whether an occupational therapy assessment is required.
  • How quickly supporting documents are supplied.
  • Whether financial eligibility needs to be assessed.
  • Contractor availability.
  • Whether quotations are required.
  • The amount of building work involved.
  • Availability of suitable bathroom equipment.

A typical process could look something like:

Enquiry → Eligibility Check → Assessment → Application → Approval → Contractor/Quotation → Installation

Not every programme follows exactly this process.

Ask These 3 Questions

When contacting the provider, ask:

1. How long are applications currently taking?

2. How long is the wait for an assessment?

3. After approval, how long does installation normally take?

These can be three completely different waiting periods.

For example, receiving a funding decision doesn't necessarily mean an installer can begin immediately.

What If Your Current Bathroom Is Unsafe?

Tell the relevant healthcare, social-care, disability or housing service if you're currently struggling to wash safely.

Ask whether an urgent assessment is appropriate and whether any temporary equipment or alternative support could help while a permanent adaptation is being considered.

Do not pay somebody who claims they can guarantee government funding or move your application to the front of an official waiting list.

Only the organisation responsible for the programme can confirm its current waiting times and approval process.
