Funniest Sports Photos Caught On Camera

Elite athletes spend years developing strength, coordination and control.

Unfortunately, none of that guarantees they'll look dignified when somebody freezes their face at 1/2000th of a second.

High-speed sports photography regularly captures facial expressions that spectators would never notice in real time.

A tennis player striking a powerful serve might grimace for only a fraction of a second. A weightlifter attempting a huge lift can produce an expression that looks completely different when isolated from the movement. A runner crossing the finish line may simultaneously display exhaustion, pain and celebration.

Then there are collisions.

Football, rugby, basketball and other contact sports create countless opportunities for arms, legs and faces to end up in visually ridiculous positions. Two athletes competing for the same ball can become so tangled that the resulting photograph looks physically impossible.

Water sports may be even better.

Competitive swimmers are photographed while breathing, diving and breaking through the surface. Water can distort facial features, cover someone's eyes or create shapes around the athlete that look almost deliberately designed.

Other classic perfectly timed moments include:

  • A ball squashing against someone's face.
  • A player's hair standing vertically in the air.
  • An athlete apparently riding on another athlete's back.
  • A referee unknowingly becoming part of the composition.
  • A spectator in the background producing the perfect reaction.
  • Equipment flying somewhere it definitely shouldn't.
  • An athlete celebrating slightly too early.

That's part of the charm of sports photography.

Television shows us the movement.

A perfectly timed photograph reveals the one ridiculous millisecond hidden inside it.
