Sports Photos Taken At The Perfect Second

The difference between an ordinary sports photograph and an extraordinary one can be a fraction of a second.

Imagine a football travelling directly in front of a player's face. Freeze the action at exactly the right instant and suddenly it looks as though the player has a football for a head.

Move forward one frame and the illusion disappears.

That's what makes perfectly timed sports photography so addictive.

Some of the funniest examples happen completely accidentally:

  • A ball appears to replace an athlete's head.
  • Two competitors overlap and seem to share one bizarre body.
  • A basketball player appears to be sitting in mid-air.
  • A swimmer's face emerges from the water in spectacular fashion.
  • A footballer's expression is captured milliseconds before impact.
  • A gymnast appears to be floating impossibly above the floor.
  • An athlete seems to balance an object on their head.

Professional sports photographers frequently shoot rapid sequences rather than attempting to press the shutter once at precisely the right moment. Modern cameras can capture multiple frames every second, dramatically increasing the chances of preserving the critical instant.

But equipment isn't everything.

Photographers anticipate where the action is going to happen. They understand the sport, choose an appropriate position and track athletes through the frame.

Then luck occasionally provides something nobody could have planned.

The result can be a photograph that looks Photoshopped even though it's simply an ordinary moment captured at an extraordinary time.

And once you've seen the illusion, it can be surprisingly difficult to make your brain see what was actually happening.
