Tanning Fails That Went Seriously Wrong

There's a fine line between getting a little colour and looking like you've been accidentally grilled.

Some of the funniest tanning fails happen when somebody stays in one position for far longer than they intended.

The Classic Mistakes

The Sunglasses Fail

Perhaps the most recognisable tanning disaster: somebody spends hours wearing sunglasses in strong sunshine, removes them and discovers two dramatically pale circles around their eyes.

The stronger the tan, the more spectacular the contrast.

The Forgotten T-Shirt

Falling asleep outside while wearing a T-shirt can create an almost perfectly straight dividing line across the arms.

Take the shirt off later and it can look like you're still wearing one.

The One-Sided Tan

Sunbathing requires one rather important manoeuvre:

Turning over.

Forget that step and the front and back can end up looking like they belong to completely different people.

When Funny Becomes Painful

There's an important difference between a funny tan line and sunburn.

Red, painful or blistered skin isn't a successful tan gone slightly too far—it's skin damage.

The NHS and American Academy of Dermatology recommend protecting skin from excessive ultraviolet exposure, including using appropriate sunscreen, seeking shade and covering exposed skin.

So laugh at the bizarre tan line.

Just don't deliberately recreate it.
