How To Get A Free Stairlift

There isn't one worldwide programme that provides free stairlifts. The best place to start is with the organisation responsible for disability support or home adaptations where you live.

Depending on your country, possible routes can include:

  • Government home-adaptation programmes.
  • Local authority or municipal assistance.
  • Disability-related grants.
  • Public healthcare or social-care support.
  • Veterans' programmes.
  • Charitable grants.
  • Housing-provider adaptations.
  • Equipment loan or reuse programmes.

Check These Routes First

1. Local Home-Adaptation Services

Contact your local authority, disability service or equivalent organisation and ask whether financial assistance is available for adaptations that make it safer to move between floors.

Don't search only for “free stairlifts.” Relevant programmes may instead be described as home modifications, accessibility adaptations, independent-living assistance or disability facilities grants.

2. Government Grants

Some countries provide grants towards necessary adaptations for disabled people.

In England and Wales, for example, a Disabled Facilities Grant can potentially help fund eligible adaptations to make it easier to get around the home, subject to assessment and the programme's requirements.

Scotland and Northern Ireland have different arrangements.

3. Veterans And Disability Programmes

Depending on the country, eligible veterans or disabled people may have access to separate home-modification assistance.

Check the exact programme rather than assuming that stairlifts are automatically covered.

4. Charities

Established disability and older-person charities may sometimes provide grants or help identify other funding routes.

Before Buying Anything

Ask:

“Is there financial assistance available for a stairlift or another adaptation to help me safely access the stairs?”

An assessment could identify a stairlift as appropriate, but another adaptation might be recommended instead.

Most importantly, check whether approval is required before ordering the stairlift yourself.
