Who Is Eligible For A Free Stairlift?

There is no universal eligibility test for a free stairlift.

Requirements depend on the funding programme and can include your mobility needs, finances, property and where you live.

You May Be Asked About:

  • Your mobility difficulties.
  • How safely you can use the stairs.
  • Where you live.
  • Whether you own or rent your home.
  • Your household income.
  • Savings or other financial resources.
  • Benefits you receive.
  • Your age under certain programmes.
  • Whether an assessment recommends a stairlift.
  • Whether the proposed adaptation is considered necessary.
  • Whether your landlord approves the installation.

The fact that stairs are difficult doesn't automatically mean a particular programme will fund a stairlift.

An Assessment May Be Required

Some home-adaptation programmes require an occupational therapist or another appropriate professional to assess your needs.

They may consider:

  • How you currently manage the stairs.
  • Your risk of falling.
  • Your ability to transfer onto and off a stairlift.
  • The layout of your property.
  • Whether a stairlift would allow safer access.
  • Whether another adaptation would be more appropriate.

Quick Eligibility Check

Before applying, ask:

Does the programme operate where I live?

Can it fund stairlifts?

Do I need an assessment?

Is the assistance means-tested?

Can homeowners and tenants both apply?

Does my landlord need to give permission?

Could I have to contribute towards the cost?

If you don't qualify through one route, ask about alternatives.

A local disability adviser, housing service or established charity may know about other programmes serving your area.
